Overview

Padmadurg – Janjira Fort

About

 Janjira Fort

On an island off the coast of Maharashtra, India, stands the renowned fort of Murud Janjira Killa. The fort is often referred to as Murud Fort or Janjira Fort. The Siddi family, local Muslim lords of Abyssinian (Ethiopian) descent, constructed it in the 17th century.

Due to its strategic location, the fort was a hub of trade and commerce throughout the Maratha and British eras. It is believed to be one of India’s strongest maritime forts, and despite numerous assaults by Maratha, Dutch, and British forces, it eluded capture.

To the fort, one must take a boat from Rajapuri jetty in Murud village. Visitors can explore the fort’s ruins today and discover its history at this well-liked tourist destination.

It’s vital to remember that the fort is a protected monument and that visitors are not allowed to harm the location or its surroundings in any way. While visiting the fort, it’s crucial to appreciate its historical significance and abide by all the rules and regulations.

Padmadurg Information

The seaside town of Murud is home to the medieval fort known as Padmadurg. The fort was in the 16th century as a part of the plan to bolster his naval presence along the Konkan coast.

The Arabian Sea’s Padmadurg Fort is on a small island encircled by water on all sides. The Murud Janjira Fort, an important defense position for the Maratha empire, was protected by the fort, which was strategically constructed on this island.

Basalt boulders that were readily available nearby and lime mortar were used to build the fort. It contains a watchtower and several bastions offering a great view of the nearby sea. Moreover, the fort featured an underground tunnel leading to the nearby Janjira Fort and could be used to flee during an assault.

During the 16th and 17th centuries, the Padmadurg Fort was crucial in defending the Maratha empire from advancing Portuguese, Dutch, and British forces. Moreover, maritime attacks against the enemy forces were conducted from the fort.

The Padmadurg Fort is now a well-liked tourist attraction in Maharashtra’s Konkan area. Travelers can board a boat to the island and visit the fort, which offers a look into the Maratha empire’s rich history and culture. The fort is a great location for photographers because it has a beautiful view of the Arabian Sea.
