Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Karnataka, India, is a treasure trove of ancient history, stunning architecture, and natural beauty. Once the capital of the mighty Vijayanagara Empire, Hampi is renowned for its well-preserved ruins that span over 4,100 hectares, showcasing the grandeur of a civilization that thrived in the 14th to 16th centuries.
Highlights of Hampi:
- Virupaksha Temple:
- One of Hampi’s oldest and most revered temples, dedicated to Lord Shiva.
- Its towering gopuram (entrance tower) stands over 50 meters high and is an architectural marvel.
- Famous for its stone chariot and intricately carved pillars that produce musical notes when tapped.
- A must-visit for its stunning Dravidian-style architecture.
- The seat of power during the Vijayanagara Empire, housing the King’s audience hall, underground chambers, and the Mahanavami Dibba, a large platform for royal ceremonies.
- A blend of Islamic and Hindu architecture, this palace has a unique lotus-shaped dome, making it a striking example of Indo-Islamic design.
- A massive structure is used to house royal elephants, showcasing a harmonious blend of Indian and Islamic architectural styles.
- A bustling market area that was once the centre of trade, where merchants sold precious stones, silk, and other goods.
- Today, it’s a lively spot with shops, cafes, and stalls selling souvenirs.
- The highest point in Hampi offers panoramic views of the ancient city and surrounding landscapes.
- It’s a popular spot for sunrise and sunset treks.
- Tucked away from the main tourist circuit, this temple complex offers a serene and peaceful atmosphere with fewer crowds.
